Dale revisits a quiet place of his childhood, which turns out to be rife with unsettling secrets and discoveries. While he was running with his arms outstretched through the winter coat display at Hovey’s Department Store, strange things were turning in the grass, slithering among the damp stones. Spurred to reflect on that time by a chance encounter with a particular shade of green that appeared to him without warning, Dale tracks this one color through several important events in his young life. For each of them, a kind of shadow reality existed, staining them from the inside, saturating them and threatening to blot them completely.
