Dale continues his pursuit of an authentic self, pondering whether anyone can ever really arrive at a place where they know who they are and what they’re doing. He welcomes some old wisdom on grief and gravesites from Washington Irving, who also engaged in a bit of slipping between other selves when it came to authoring his most famous works. Dale recalls an interaction with a cemetery salesman whose evening activities are a joyful respite from his day job peddling tombstones; he transports himself back to his elementary school days with regular visits from his mother and trips to the school nurse; and reveals what it was like to be asked a question he never expected he’d ever be asked. Listening tip: this episode is best enjoyed by lighting a candle that smells like strawberries.
