Dale stirs the spirit within when he welcomes acclaimed Chicago-based composer, clarinetist, keyboardist, and singer Angel Bat Dawid to the Deep Night. Dale and Angel bond over their shared star signs as they talk about finding one’s authentic creative self, the hidden power of a clarinet, and all the ways that music can offer a cathartic release from daily aggressions. Named a bright new star of jazz, Angel released the searing album LIVE in 2020, which serves as a powerful documentation of the highs and lows of her first European tour. With four new albums in the works Angel talks about the process of making music and what she’s looking forward to now that our literal and metaphorical masks are being removed. Plus Dale mourns a place that was special to him, and recalls the transformative history of Gowanus Creek.
For more on Angel visit her label, International Anthem on Bandcamp, and give the albums a listen. Also if you haven’t done so already, be sure to add Sun Ra to your playlist and get blasted into outer space.
